A review of YouTube downloaders found

Preamble

I am often of YouTube, and have found there are videos that I keep going back to for the kids and reference. In video Jug once you are a member you can download videos, YouTube nada.

So I decided to look at YouTube downloaders. I run Vista, with 1Gb RAM, otherwise nothing special.

I decided to document the results of the quest, the results were revealing, none of the downloader I found seem to do the job, and some of the ones claiming to be free are NOT.

I did a simple test went to 3 videos, one from the home page of YouTube the others a muppets, and a coffee related video

Firstly the ones that worked

  • Chrome Extension Chrome YouTube Downloader - 1.5.7 by FlavioBayer, after restarting Chrome, clicked update now under chrome://extensions, still nada, then I noticed that there was a download button added underneath the video on the YouTube sites, and it works like a dream, you can select the quality an the video type.
  • Chrome Extenstion: Loudtronix YouTube Downloader Extension, said it was installed, added "buttons" under the YouTube video, which I clicked, took me to loudtronix.com website, then it allowed me to select the video quality, and it downloaded. Uninstalled since it is also remind me and pay me ware, or guilt ware.

Secondly these did not

  • Any Video Converter did not download, not free, just has a free version that they use to lure you in.
  • Cudeblabs: YouTubeVideo Download & Convert – crashed
  • MediaProSoftFreeYouTubetoAVIMPEGConverter – nothing downloaded, use their DVD to AVI works well, and I am very happy with it, and it is free
  • Keronsoft's Video VAC: VideoVAKR, it installs WinPcap (which allows programs to capture and transmit network packets bypassing the protocol stack, sounds risky). It is trialware, so I will probably not use it. Also wants to be run in Administrator mode so did not even run it. Took I while to uninstall too.
  • Apowersoft YouTube Downloader 2.0.1,
they claim freeware, but it is not and it also did not work. Found it complicated to use.
  • Free YouTube Downloader Converter 1.2, asks for registration. Did not download and created 0 size files
  • Wondershare Free YouTube downloader, worked and then hung. Re ran and still hung, infact it could not even force quit.
  • MiniDVD's Super Free Youtube Video Downloader, started downloading then did nothing
E.M. Free Youtube Download Tool, nada

What did you mean by "remind me and pay me ware, or guilt ware"?

@LoudTronix: I mean that it reminds you, that you have not paid, and please do. That is the guilt part.

Bitcoin / Cryptocurrency – what is it and how can I benefit

What is it I started investigating Bitcoin when it was worth just over $1000 a bitcoin. I was interested in what it was and how it worked. A lot of people are saying we missed the boat, but I believe that everyone should at least try put a little money in now, or at least use a faucet (see below) to make a little micro-currency. You can read a Wiki article about bitcoin and its history etc. But what you need to know is that it is a currency, that is independent of country. No one really knows who invented the concept of a cryptocurrency since the person who published the paper used a nom de plume. All new cryptocurrencies work more or less the same way as Bitcoin. So as I explain below I interchange these terms. Bitcoin is the original cryptocurrency. How Bitcoin works The currency releases a coin based on a mathematical formula. There will never be more than 21 million bitcoins (other cryptocurrencies do not work like this). Each bitcoin can have divided into one hundred mil...

Access conversion NOTE1: default DateSerial in VBA/Access to SQL

I have started slowly converting my Access database to SQL. The reason is that I would like to take the application online. After trying to use Access's (version 2007) transfer tool, which did not work that well. I found Microsoft's SQL Migration Assistant 2008 for Access, nicknamed SSMA. Which you can download here . When you install there is a niggle about the license, which you need to download into their specified directory and it must be the name they provide. So about the create table. My one table would not convert and I could not see why. After looking at the SQL command I saw the problem was the use of DateSerial. I googled a few sites and could not find an answer The CREATE TABLE line was: [RequireUntilDate] datetime2(0) DEFAULT DateSerial(1980,1,1) NOT NULL, I clicked on the whole command and copied it and then in SQL Server Management Studio, I tried to create the table and found that if I specified the date in US date format it worked: [RequireUnti...
